Ce genre de disque n’est pas facile à décrire. Le trio basse / guitare / sax triture savamment sa formule à grands coups d’effets. Les pistes sont brouillées, les frontières entre les instruments s’effacent. C’est ambiant mais pas chiant, jazz mais pas trop, complexe mais évident. J’imagine que si Tortoise sortait un disque chez ECM, celà ressemblerait à ça. Rien que pour la magnifique cover de “The Fool on the Hill”, cet album magique vaut le détour.
Pour contraster avec The Weather Station, le folk rugueux, brut de décoffrage, de Richard Dawson. Avec ses mélodies un peu tordues, sa tonalité légèrement dissonante et cette voix si particulière, « End of the Middle » me captive à chaque fois de bout en bout.

La musique de Tamara Lindeman suit son chemin, et le dernier The Weather Station, “Humanhood”, reprend là où s’était arreté le précédent. Un disque complexe mais accessible, entre pop, touches jazzy et légères expérimentations, avec cette voix si particulière qui évoque parfois Joni Mitchell. De la pop soyeuse peut-être déroutante au premier abord, mais toujours aussi classe.

Comme la fin de l’année approche et que la saison des listes est officiellement lancée, je me suis penché sur les disques qui m’ont le plus accompagné en 2025. La sélection n’est pas facile mais l’exercice est plutôt fun, alors on lance les hostilités avec les Glyders. Le dernier album du groupe, “Forever”, est un savant mélange de blues-rock, country et psychédelisme, laid-back on pourrait dire, faute de meilleur qualificatif… “Forever” donne envie de prendre la route, se poser dans les dunes, ouvrir une bière et glandouiller. Ouais, tout ça.
I’ve always liked to modify my music equipment to suit my liking. Upgrade my guitars electronics, build my own effects (with more or less success to be honest…), experimenting with tubes in my amps, toying with all these things has always been fun to me.
In a few weeks I’ll play a gig with some colleagues on a pretty big stage in Cherbourg, so I thought checking if everything was ok with my Deluxe Reverb wasn’t a bad idea, as I mostly play acoustic at home and the amp is rarely used. Then I remembered some pretty annoying details with it, so it was a good opportunity to bite the bullet and finally fix a few things.
First, the overly sensitive reverb tank.
This has always been a pain in the ass because I couldn’t use the amp if it was touching the floor. Even slowly walking around it on a pretty hard floor was triggering thunder. The problem could even occur when the amp was on a stand or a flight case, though to a lesser extent. It can be a cool effect if you want it, but not for me thanks, especially in the middle of a quiet song… When I was gigging a lot more at substantial volume, it would make the amp so unusable that I had bought a reverb pedal. That’s a shame because the Deluxe is partly known for its desired reverb sound. Yet I had given up.
So I thought I would give it another try, the amp was well worth it. After some research I quickly realised I had already checked the « usual suspects », springs, cables, tubes, nothing to report, all clear. I also had put foam under the tank without success. Then I stumbled upon a note about reverb tanks orientation. In short, they are built to be mounted in a certain direction. Without much conviction, what the hell, let’s try it upside down ! BINGO. No more unwanted noises, I could jump next to the amp like a 80’s heavy metal guitar player without starting a thunderstorm. This was a pretty simple tweak at the end, but I couldn’t imagine the guys at fender’s factory mounting the tank the wrong way round… What a waste of time.
Secondly, make the reverb more controllable.
I like the effect but I’m not into reverb-drenched super-wet guitar sounds. Christian Bland for example has a killer tone don’t get me wrong, but you know, to each his own and I’m more of a dry guy. I needed a way to make the reverb pot more usable for my usual « almost dry » tone.
This is a classic mod, just replace the 12AT7 driver tube with a 12AU7, this reduces the reverb and therefore the effect is much more controllable with the knob. Easy peasy.
Finally, a much less efficient speaker.
The Deluxe Reverb is a 22W tube amp. It gets pretty loud, especially if you want to reach that desired « sweet spot », where the tubes start to sing and the magic happens. I have some dirt pedals I can rely on to provide the amount of overdrive I need, so I don’t need to push the amp to its limits. But it’s clear the Deluxe Reverb needs to be pushed a little to perform as it should… I like an « edge of breakup » guitar sound, and at this setting the amp gets loud, like unreasonably loud for daily practice at home… Sincere apologies to my neighbours for all these years.
Shortly after I bought the amp, I had upgraded the speaker with a Cannabis Rex, a favourite among DR users which sounds quite good, but wasn’t exactly the right move for my volume problem. The Weber DT12 seemed like an ideal much less efficient candidate for its replacement. Its efficiency is supposed to be around 94db, so I thought it would make a notable difference with the CR’s 102db’s !
I took a shot and I’m glad I did. The expected difference is real and I can play my amp at a much more home friendly level. It sounds great too, has a slightly less medium sound (compared to the Cannabis Rex) that I’m digging. Now thinking of selling my weber attenuator…
My Fender Deluxe Reverb is now ready.
Habituellement je ne suis pas vraiment intéressé par les coffrets d’inédits et raretés que sortent les artistes. Après tout, si ces morceaux ne se sont pas retrouvés sur les albums, c’est qu’il y a peut-être une raison non ? Mais il s’agit de Wilco, et je ne pouvais tout simplement pas ignorer ce colossal coffret sorti à l’occasion des 20 ans de “A Ghost is Born”. Sans trop d’attente donc, je me suis plongé dans l’écoute de ces 8 disques regroupant l’album original, des versions alternatives, des enregistrements live, mais aussi les « Fundamentals », une série d’improvisations conceptuelles en studio.
L’écoute de ce coffret apporte un éclairage tout nouveau sur des morceaux que je ne m’imaginais pas redécouvrir. Les versions alternatives, pour la plupart, ne sont pas des « sous-versions », mais des visions souvent complètement différentes et parfois surprenantes. Certaines d’entre elles auraient pu selon moi se retrouver sur l’album sans rougir, et je me suis même surpris à préférer certaines de ces versions à celles qui ont fini sur l’album. « Handshake Drugs » pour n’en citer qu’une. Il y a aussi des morceaux qui resteront sur la touche, comme « Kicking Television », qui donnera son titre au live sorti un an plus tard, ou « Improbable Germany », esquisse de ce qui deviendra « Impossible Germany », un des morceaux piliers de l’album « Sky Blue Sky ».
Les « Fundamentals », quand à eux, nous plongent dans l’intimité créative d’un groupe au sommet de son art et en constante évolution. Un peu comme si on avait poussé la porte du studio pour assister à une de leurs répétitions… On fait sans difficulté le lien entre ces sessions et l’esprit qui s’est retrouvé sur l’album. En tant que musicien actuellement en phase de composition, c’est très intéressant et véritablement inspirant. Très bonne surprise, je recommande.

La sortie d’un nouvel album de Ripley Johnson est toujours une bonne nouvelle. Que ce soit avec Wooden Shjips, Moon Duo, ou encore Rose City Band, son dernier groupe qui sent bon le soleil, les road-trips et les copains. La pochette est assez représentative de l’ambiance, et c’est pile ce qu’il nous faut pour finir de traverser l’hiver.
The Boss OD-3 was the first pedal I bought, 25 years ago I think. It has endured severe treatment, lots of rehearsal and shows without fail. I always thought it did the job though I knew something better existed somewhere.
I then tested many candidates for its replacement, bought and resold ts9 variants, klon clones, mxr gt-od, ehx soulfood, crowther hot cake… Nothing wrong with all these pedals, but nothing magic either, and I always returned to my good old od-3.
As the boss recently showed signs of fatigue, I resumed my search and stumbled across the Green Rhino from Way Huge, a name I had heard back in the 90’s. I pulled the trigger and have no regrets. It has something very unique in its sound, a laid back character that really suits my style. The form factor is really cool, and the look is great. Even the packaging is great !
The quest is over I guess. For now.
